Direct Orthopedic Care, or DOC, specializes in urgent care and treatment for minor to serious orthopedic injuries and chronic conditions in adults and children. It was founded in 2014 in Boise, Idaho, by Dr. David Hassinger.

DOC currently has four clinics in Dallas, Texas; 3 clinics in Austin, Texas; and 2 clinics in Southern California – all staffed by board certified Orthopedic Specialists ready to serve those in need of immediate orthopedic care. In addition, most of DOC’s clinics have Orthopedic Surgeons and Physical Therapists on-site.

You might be wondering, what is orthopedic care? Orthopedics is the field of medicine concerned with the study and treatment of the musculoskeletal system, particularly the spine, joints, and muscles. DOC treats a variety of ailments including sprains, fractures or breaks, ligament injuries, tendonitis, and arthritis (just to name a few) in all areas of the body. They also provide physical therapy and regenerative medicine for more chronic conditions.

DOC clinics are open 7 days a week and on holidays which makes access to orthopedic care more convenient. Historically, if someone got injured after hours or on a weekend, the most likely place to seek treatment was the emergency room. However, the ER is considerably less efficient as patients will generally not see an orthopedic specialist and will pay substantially more than they would by visiting DOC.  Ultimately, the ER will refer a patient to an orthopedic specialist like those at DOC. Patients can now avoid both the wait at the ER and the wait for a referral by making DOC their first and only stop. DOC specialists can diagnose and treat most orthopedic issues right away, up to and including those requiring surgery. With most insurance plans, a visit to DOC is treated the same as an office visit or, in some cases, as a specialist visit. Either way, the total cost of a DOC visit is substantially less than one to the ER.  Additionally, DOC provides its services in a 5-Star hospitality-like setting with clean, modern clinics, friendly and bright team members, and all guests (the DOC term for patients) are treated with compassion and respect.

But making HR decisions and staying up-to-date with all the ever-changing laws and labor codes can be a challenge for a company operating multiple facilities in different states. We spoke with DOC’s HR Director, Ashleigh Abadie, to discuss the types of unique challenges her HR team faces.
