Rey Rivera | Founder, Owner
Payroll Systems customer since 2018…
In 2009, TheraEx Staffing Services was founded by Rey Rivera. He started the company with a goal to be a provider for rehabilitation (physical, occupational, and speech therapy) staffing services. Rey was working full-time as a Regional Vice President of Operations and Area Manager for another organization while trying to hit the ground running for his new business. In his spare time, he met with hospital executives to bring awareness to the services TheraEx could provide. Coming from a healthcare background, this new venture was something he felt confident would succeed.
In 2012, Rey moved to the Bay Area keeping his business goals intact. He developed contracts with several hospitals in the area to provide them with full-service rehab operations including billing, staffing, and organizing programs for therapy needs. Three years after his big move, TheraEx joined AMN Healthcare’s vendor system which has helped to transform business goals into focusing primarily on staffing and recruiting. TheraEx is now able to offer staffing solutions to hospitals and medical practices in different states like Oregon, Georgia, Hawaii, and California. (AMN Healthcare is at the forefront of health staffing solutions. The company offers a broad spectrum of physician and clinician staffing services for temporary to permanent placement positions by partnering with staffing and recruiting agencies like TheraEx.)
Currently TheraEx has fifty-two W-2 employees and about four contractors. The company recruits for Physical Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Speech Therapists, and more recently Nursing professionals including RNs, CNAs, Licensed Vocational Nurses Medical Assistants, and Transporters. When screening applicants, TheraEx recruiters make sure to match candidate skill sets to the specialties requested in each company job description and require a background check and evaluation of accredited education.

Rey was able to shed some light on the unique challenges the business has faced over the years. “The recruiting process can be difficult at times – finding the right candidate for each organization. Sometimes there may be a need in one hospital, but not enough people in that area are looking for a job,” he explained. As a smaller business, TheraEx is also challenged from the competition of bigger companies. However, they have found that positioning themselves as a boutique agency solely focused on specific disciplines can be a great advantage to them.
TheraEx has been a Payroll Systems client since 2018. We were interested to know, “why outsource payroll rather than doing it in-house?” Rey stated, “We realized payroll is not our forte and we want professionals to do it. As a growing company, it is easier to rely on another organization that specializes in this field.”
Rey also expressed his hope for the company’s future expansion and has goals for TheraEx to be somewhat like an AMN down the road. To learn more about TheraEx or are interested in staffing through TheraEx, you can visit their website here.
